Kandinsky is considered to be the first painter in the abstract style. The explosive force in his use of colour achieves a synthesis of form which is both rational and coherent. The painter uses abstract representations in order to express his spiritual world. It is the highest and most lyrical artistic expression. Federico Zeri (Rome, 1921-1998), eminent art historian and critic, was vice-president of the National Council for Cultural and Environmental Treasures from 1993. M ember of the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he was decorated with the Legion of Honor by the French government. Author of numerous artistic and literary publications; among the most well-known: Pittura e con-trorifonna, the Catalogue of Italian Painters in the Metropolitan Museum of New York and the Walters Gallery of Baltimora, and the book Confesso che ho sbagliato.
